Do I need a referral?

A referral is not required as osteopaths are primary health care practitioners who are taught diagnostic skills and therefore able to treat anyone without referral.

Can I claim treatment on my health fund?

Depending on your level of extras cover, most private health funds will provide some rebate for osteopathy (which encompasses the treatment modalities used by your osteopath and includes low level laser therapy). The rebate can be claimed through HICAPS at the time of your appointment, provided you have your private health fund card with you, and you will be required to pay the gap to settle your account.

Is there a Medicare rebate available?

Generally, Medicare does not provide any rebate for osteopathic treatment (including low level laser therapy). However, there is a Medicare scheme for those with chronic conditions which can provide a rebate for up to five (5) treatments per calendar year. You should consult with your GP to see if you are eligible for this scheme.

What should I bring to my initial treatment?

It is helpful to bring any relevant reports, X-rays, scans or test results that you may have, however it is not a requirement to have imaging or testing prior to your appointment. Depending on the area requiring treatment, you may like to wear loose clothing or bring a pair of shorts if treatment on your lower limbs is required.

What style of treatment will be used?

Osteopathy has a wide range of treatment approaches available and is tailor-made to work in synchrony with your body. Techniques can be used which directly address motion restrictions by applying pressure or a counter-balancing force against the resistance. Examples range from tissue-specific massage, stretching, myofascial release, joint articulation, and mobilisation. Techniques can also be used that utilise your body’s own ability to unwind tension. These approaches are more subtle as the osteopath engages the inherent rhythmic functions of the body which utilize breathing and involuntary motion patterns. These include balanced ligamentous tension, cranial or biodynamic approaches. In the case that a particular technique style is not suitable for you or is not achieving the desired outcome, after discussion with the patient the osteopath may alter the treatment approach.

How do I know if Low Level Laser Therapy is suitable for me?

This question may be answered either by asking reception, or may be discussed and decided upon in the initial consultation. If you are not sure if your condition is suitable for treatment by an osteopath using Laser Therapy we recommend booking an Initial Osteopathic consultation so that the osteopath can take your history and determine the most appropriate course of treatment.

Is there an age limit for treatment?

At Balmain Osteopaths our focus is to support the wellbeing of the whole family, through all stages of life, therefore we offer treatment for all age categories, from babies through to senior citizens.

Will I be able to exercise after I have treatment?

Generally, gentle exercising such as swimming and walking is often okay, however should be checked with the practitioner. It is usually advised to avoid strenuous or intensive physical activity for 24 hours after your treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

It is generally advised to have at least three to six (3 to 6) treatments initially, however this varies depending upon the individual and the condition. Further treatment may be required beyond this in order to make further progress, stabilise your condition and to help prevent recurrence.
